Hello there, this is a great idea...    ... my wife and I were mesmerised by it. Best regards, Dick H.(South Australia)

As an ex Shaw Gorbie, it was great to see the old place again on your webcam from here in Ontario Canada!!

Regards

Carol G

First of all great site, keeps us "exgawbies" in touch.

What about a pub corner? Whenever I start reminiscing with friends and

recall the pubs that I use to frequent, they seem to think I'm joking about

the amount of pubs in Shaw. Maybe a photo album with a "blurb", you know

date built, ale sold, that type of stuff.

Comments: Hi
I like the website...keep up the good work
As a Shaw Gawby its interesting to be able to view Shaw in its present state.
I can see that you have worked hard in developing the site.
It will make some interesting viewing when the pubs shut in the summer months.
I am a fairly new business in Shaw and looking to promote my trade.Just wondered whether this would this be possible on your site.

Thanks

Comments: Greetings from Colorado. Looking at the site made me feel very nostalgic. I spent the first fourteen years of my life on Shaw Road. Used to hang out in Shaw a lot. Nice work and thanks for the memories. mike t.

Comments: hi,many years ago "shaw" was the old lancashire word for chapel, this was Crompton.people used to say "are you going to shaw" meaning are you going to the church or chapel, that was before the Cape mill had its club and then it grew to a dance hall ,there was even a cat that had wings on Market St.,that was the water rates paying shop, and Howarths pork shop and Wrights coal merchants had a coal bucket in the window oh and there was a wishing well on market street, happy days,(like your web site)John.

Comments: Hi guys, I'm a shaw gawby living on george street, just wondering, would it be possible to get rover cam to drive down my street? great to see shaw on the internet, seems really weird when i see it, it will feel creepy walking home from school past your camera now!!

Comments:
Hi

How about a nostalga page .

I was in shaw baths a couple of years ago, splashing around with my kids and started to explain
how the baths used to be ie with the balcony all around i also pointed out the blue steel ironwork supporting the roof and what we as kids used to do when Wayne the key man wasnt around. we'd climb up onto the balcony ,stand on the back of the seats ,grab hold of the ironwork and monkey crawl across the roof joists untill we met a big steel pully in the center at this point we knew we were ouer the middle on the pool and we would dangle and drop into the deep end . crazy i know but we were just kids . the pully is still there today and i an now 47.
Best regards Stuart G.

Comments: Seriously object to the camera in Shaw - as a resident and regular user of the village I feel that my privacy is seriously invaded - you have no right to video my movements. I shall be pursuing this with Data Protection

Reply from The Shawcam Operator: I am sorry that amongst the many who find the Shawcams an enjoyable recreational facility there are a very few people who feel inconvenienced by two cameras in Shaw town centre, that are in full compliance with The Data Protection Act, well publicised and available for anyone to view. Any person has the same right to take pictures in Market Street Shaw as any other public place in the European Economic Community. This freedom means, for example, that when people go on their holidays and take pictures, say on a beach, they do not have to ask the permission of everyone, no matter how distant, who may incidently appear in the pictures. Before anyone persues a course of action trying to limit a persons right to do something they should consider just how far reaching the implications will be if ever such a limitation is imposed on everyone. Also the few people who feel threatened by two cameras in Shaw town centre should fully understand  just how often they are recorded by cameras in public places in the UK. From The Information Commissioners recent research there were at the last count more than 4.2 Million CCTV cameras in public places in the UK. "The UK population is the most surveillanced society in the world." There are surveillance cameras in most large town centres, including Oldham and Manchester. There are cameras in most department stores and many smaller retail businesses. Many of these cameras have the ability to zoom in on individual people and to follow and record their actions. In the UK It is probably impossible to leave your home and travel a few miles without having been photographed by several cameras along the way. There are also Web cameras in many towns and citys throughout the UK including Manchester, many of which are installed and made available on the Internet by Local Authorities. For example try this one in Dundee http://dundeecity.gov.uk/ which is fully controllable with Pan, tilt and zoom controls.

Or this one in Manchester City centre:

http://www.gmpte.com/content.cfm?category_id=102792

Or here for 160 cameras across London:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/travel/jamcams/camloco/central.shtml

It is possible that in the near future such cameras will be installed in Oldham and surrounding towns if the Local authority deems them to be beneficial to promote the district's interest.

To the detractor above I would say, please feel free to persue your complaint with The Information Commissioners Office, You will find their website and all the information on  how to make a complaint at : http://www.informationcommissioner.gov.uk/

You will be exercising one of your democratic rights, albeit in an attempt to restrict the rights of others.

Please bear in mind that there is also a "Freedom of Information Act" now in effect in the UK.

I have already had discussions with The Information Commissioners Office and I am satisfied that The Shawcams do not require registration under The Data Protection Act.

with best regards, and nothing but good intentions,

The Shawcam Operator.

Comments: Spotted the article in tonight's Chron and had a quick look. I also cannot get the streaming cam to work. I get an error loading the Jave applet. I have just checked on the Java website and it confirms that my jave installation is up to date.

Reply from The Shawcam Operator: To cure these problems the webcam software has been updated to a version compatible with the latest Java software.

Comments: Born at Woodend, raised at Wren's Nest, a true Shaw Gawby. Left 25 years ago, it's nice to be able to get a shot of home when the "home sickness" kicks in. I may even get to see some of my old mates reeling out of the Bell on Friday nights.
I think it's good that someone is giving Shaw some visability, since the amalgamation with Oldham and they knocked our town hall down, Shaw lost a piece of it's identity.
Keep it up.

Comments: Strange isn't it how the one objector on this guest book, the one who doens't want to be watched, has clicked on here to watch others and post a comment!

I would like a webcam on some of the main street in Shaw, for many reasons.

1) As a newcomer to Shaw, it would have saved me a load of money and hassle. I bought my house on a main road in Shaw, having moved to Shaw from outside the area. Had a camera been installed on the street, I would have seen the many young people that congregate around my home, vandalising my property and destroying the surrounding garden areas (who know I may have even caught the perpetrator in the act!)
2) It would serve as a deterrent by way of recording images for security purposes.

Still I love my home very much and enjoy living in Shaw.
The yobs terrorising me and my husband will not beat us.
I love the area too much, but with hindsight would have bought elsewhere in Shaw.

Can someone explain what a Shaw Gauby really is/means?
Cheers

Marina

Reply from the Shawcam Operator:

Hi Marina,

You, or anybody else with similar problems, may be interested  in this story which was attributed to "The Norfolk Eastern daily Press" and perhaps be able to ask the Local police if they can supply you with a camera under this scheme:

Victims of yobs to be given cameras (new.edp24.co.uk)
Families targeted by yobs are to be handed surveillance equipment, in a groundbreaking police scheme. Video cameras will be rigged up at homes across Norwich to allow victims of hate crimes to gather evidence against their attackers. Initially, 15 cameras will be distributed, but the scheme will be rolled out if it proves successful. The move comes after officers went to Oldham in Greater Manchester to monitor a similar project. PC Richard Vincent, the central policing area's Minority Ethnic Liaison Officer (MELO), said: "The important thing about these cameras is they will offer reassurance to individuals. Vulnerable people will be able to see and hear what is happening outside their home at the flick of a switch. "Secondly, if offences do occur, they will be recorded and those recordings could be used in evidence to prosecute the perpetrators. "We hope this will be a quick and efficient method of offering reassurance and detecting offences. 5/6/2005

The only description of where "Shaw Gorbie" originates from, I have received, comes from Ian Winterbottom, who says it is a derogatory name derived from Gormless Idiot and stems back to somewhere in the past when someone from Shaw summoned the Fire Brigade to a building on fire in Shaw by sending them a postcard !

Comments: Hi Its Pat Newton From OZ Previously Pat Hyde from Shaw, I'm just packing up to come on a visit for the whole of May
I went to St Joseph's school & would love the Shawcam to view Cowlishaw Lane, St' Joseph's, High Crompton Park & Shawside Park if still there. Would love to see some of my old school friends
Pat

Comments: Hello there, I find it remarkable to be able to see this in real time...... my first cousin lives in Shaw (Tony Kevens)..... best regards, Dick Hayhurst (Australia).

Comments: Not sure if anyone else has noticed but the displayed times on the cams are incorrect, the North cam is around 3 minutes slow, the South cam is 3 minutes fast.

Reply From The Shawcam Operator: The clocks are now synchronised to an Internet time standard.

Did you know that when Royton town hall was built in 1880. The clock on its rear side (which faces towards High Crompton) was deliberately made smaller than those on the other three sides so as to make the clock difficult to read from High Crompton Shaw. Thats how mean the Local councillors were in those days...

and some may say they haven't improved any lately ;-)

Comments: WOW - Great site!

It's about time that Shaw caught up with the rest of the world on the web :)

This site has also inspired me to create a website dedicated to Shaw www.shawlife.co.uk - It is still very bare at the moment but that is where the people of Shaw come in! The website will allow Shaw residents to actually write the content for the website (just as easy as writing in this guestbook) - a true community website, where all Gorbies can add there own bit.

The Shawcam Operator has given me kind permission to advertise this on shawcam and hopefully if we can get enough people interested then we will have a true online shaw community (complete with discussion forums, image gallery and local news).

If you are interested in such a website then please visit www.shawlife.co.uk and use the contact us link for further details and your own log-in to start adding to the site!

Thanks all

I am sure there would be a lot of interest!!

Comments: Hello there!!
just wanted to say that this is a wicked idea, i'm a shaw gauby born and bread (although i am drifting further & further up to high crompton as i get posher & posher!!) i work in manchester & love being able to make sure it's still ticking over without me! just an idea though - any chance of more web-cams, closer the 'duke of york' end & 'four-lanes end' cos it's hard to see what's going on down there as it is!!
thank you very much!!
jill

Reply from The Shawcam Operator:

Hello Janet and Jill,

The idea of a Chaddertoncam, Roytoncam, Newheycam etc, or extending the Shawcam system, are things I had in mind as possibilities for the future but I am reluctant to finance any expansion at present. Currently I operate the Shawcams as a hobby and unless it could ever be turned into a business  it is unlikely that I would be willing to set up similar operations in other towns, but there's nothing stopping someone else from doing it. Adding more cameras to the Shawcam system is an easier option but would require the co-operation of a business willing to host the camera(s) and again some money to spend. What I think would be a good idea for any retail business that has premises on a high street is to include webcameras on their own business website. The presence of a webcam would guarantee them visitors to their website.

As I have said before, other town councils are putting up town centre webcams, I think it is only a matter of time before Oldham gets in on the act.

It will Probably happen before you see a Tram running through town .

Best regards,

The Shawcam Operator.

Comments: This may help you with your Pub Crawl page. Now you have to remember that I left Shaw in 1979 so some of the info may be off a bit.
The Weavers ex' Railway Hotel, was an OB pub in my day as was the Waggon & Horses on Rochdale Road, so they are probably Boddington's now.
The Pineapple was a Chester's house.
The Cricketers nee Molders Arms, served Marston's. The Park Inn was a Mathew Brown pub and the King's Arms was I think a Greenall Whitney house.
As you can see I spent a bit of time touring when I lived there, although the best pint then and still is now is Sam Smiths, it's also the cheapest.

Comments: Until going into the R.A.F., I lived in the County End area of Lees, but I did spend time in and around Shaw and Moorside! After the "WII" was over I worked for a period at "Seddon Motors" in Shaw, unfortunately waking a few of the inhabitants, early morning as I arrived for work there on my Rudge Special motor cycle! I have been here in Ontario, Canada since 1952 and all except one of my Family have been born here. We have been back to the Oldham area several times over the years and all the family enjoy your Shawcam Website very much, and I hope you don't mind the fact that we have it listed on our Family Website as a favorite viewing URL? I am quite impressed with the job you have done setting it up, and I am quite sure that ex-pat Oldhamers over here (and they are many in Ontario!) would love to have access to your website! Heartiest congatulations on your efforts, and thanks for many Hours spent roaming the Shaw area on the familiar different side of the Highway to here!!! In appreciation - Owdham Lad.

Reply from The Shawcam Operator: Hello Ben, ( I would guess Ben Dover is not your real name but the alias you prefer to be known by, but that's OK.)

So far you are only the third person in the whole World who has left a remark expressing displeasure with the Shawcam website. Or maybe the same person that has come back three times ! Who Knows!

When weighed against the vast majority of people who leave favourable remarks in this guest book or send emails I don't get too upset by the odd negative comment and refrain from deleting the remarks without letting people see them.

I don't really need to demonstrate how popular the Shawcam website is but it's hard to resist so here goes:

Below is a copy of the usage statistics for the Shawcam website as collected by The Internet Service Provider.

If you look at item 17 this shows the total number of Hosts that have connected to the Shawcam website since it's inception in late January 2005. Item 18 shows the number of Hosts in the last week. Each Host represents at least a single distinct computer connection. In many cases more than one computer connects through one host address, but if we keep it simple, then there have been at least 8,826 individual computers that have been used to look at the Shawcam website in the last seven months and 1,083 in the last seven days.

So it would seem there are a fair number of people who find the Shawcam website of interest. These visitors come from all over the World to look at Shaw on the Internet , mostly England, Australia, Canada and New Zealand  but many other places as well. You can see more details of the Shawcam website statistics by following this link.

I wish I had more time and resources to devote to making the Shawcam website better but I have to earn a living doing a full time job and spend time doing other things of interest.

If you can produce a better website Ben, I am sure there are more people than me who would be interested to see it. If you have a website or intend to produce one then send me the details and I will be glad to put a link to it on the Shawcam website so that your website can share in an average of more than one thousand distinct visitors a month.

Comments: Hi there operator

I received the link to Shawcam as spam mail and although I have not been there I was at one time trying to trace an old friend who lived there.
Is it normal to receive the link in this fashion or is it the exception, as I found it somewhat intriguing.

I'd be interested in your comments.

Regards
Allan R

Reply from The Shawcam Operator: Hi Allan, To bring the Shawcam website to the attention of a wider pool of people, emails were sent to people who had expressed an interest in Shaw or thereabouts on email contact lists. Typically email lists such as those on local newspaper websites such as The Oldham Chronicle, or Oldham Advertiser were used. If people had enter their names more than once on such email lists then they were likely to receive an email from Shawcam more than once. Many people who were contacted in this way, although they may not have expressed a direct interest in Shaw itself turn out to have a good connection with Shaw, such as they once lived in Shaw, worked in Shaw, or went to School in Shaw.

Best Regards,

The Shawcam Operator.

Comments: Hello Operator
Sorry, sounds like a BT connection, anyway thank you for the reply explaining how I got the site address and every success in the future.
I don't know if it's appropriate to ask but if anyone knows a Pamela Ball who I believe worked in the local library (maybe mid 80's) it would be nice to hear fron her.

Comments: going back to royton town hall clock, the reason for the smaller clock is because there is no clock face facing royton from shaw parish church.
question, what is the correct spelling of gaubie?
my mother tells me the name gaubie came from shaw folk gawping at pigs !!! great web cams sent them all over the world dinky mellor

Comments: How to Spell "Shaw Gorbie" ? It would seem there isn't a correct spelling, nobody spelt it out.If, as has been said before, the name is slang for "Gormless Idiot." it was just a derogatory name for people from Shaw, used by people from other parts of Oldham. Which in a time when few people travelled further than a few miles from home, must have seemed almost as far away and backward as a third world country.

Comments: Hi just looking at all the pubs in shaw, when i was a kid we use to go on a walk called the Beating of the Bounds

Comments: i think this site is absolutely brilliant , we have 4 young girls who are at the age of frequenting the local hostalries it gives my wife and i reassurance that the town is safe particulary at night time. well done keep up the good work!!!!! mark and estelle

Comments: Hi my name is Shelagh and I lived on Buckstones for 25 years before getting married and moving to Rochdale. In June 2005 my husband and I moved to Australia with our two daughters. It is very different to Shaw, the Web site was recommended my Mick Mellor who I used to go to wchool with (via Friends reunited). It is good to have a look at the place where I grew up and had so much fun, especially the nights spent in the Kings Arms with Olive(landlady - early 80's). I will definately keep looking in to see what changes are being made in the place.

My older brother still lives in Shaw with his family.

Comments: Great site, I left Shaw 21 years ago and now that all my immediate family have moved out of town never get to go back so this is a great reminder of the old place.
Nice one,

Comments: Hi your website is really good. Telephoned my friends in Shaw this evening they had never heard of your website and would not believe I had seen their house on your roving camera. So I told them to log on.Keep up the good work''

Comments: Hi Shaw Gorbies! We lived and worked in Shaw (Lilac Mill When It was Courtaulds) From 1974 till we emigrated to West Australia in 1977. Came for a trip down memory lane in May 2005. Just found the Shawcam and it is so addictive! So nice to be able to pop down Market Street whenever we want. Please give us a wave.
Best wishes to the lovely folk of Shaw.

Kind regards to all the Pub Landlords and shopkeepers for being great and polite,I do hope

Comments: A great website but as I haven't visited Shaw for around 30 years I had difficulty recognising many of the photographs.
As an engineering student I did a years training at GEC Osram and stayed in lodgings at 3 Cowlishaw.
I would appreciate pictures of these if possible. I gather the Osram works is no longer standing. :-(

Comments: As a High Crompton born and bred(Clegg St, now Park Cottages) I don't recognise one of the picturs you have og High crompton Park, are you sure it is correct?
Would be good to see some more aerial photographs. Have you any more of Scouts and guides in Shaw? My family were involved for years.
Margaret (Hilton) now living in Chelmsford but visiting Shaw often where my sister still lives.

Reply from The Shawcam Operator:    Hello Margaret, The pictures on the Shawcam website High Crompton Park page are all from High Crompton Park. There has been some redesigning of the park in recent years.

You can view aerial pictures of almost anywhere on earth, including Shaw,
by downloading the Google Earth software for free from http://earth.google.com/

Sorry I haven't got any more pictures of the Scouts or Guides but if anybody wants to send me some they can do by email to admin@shawcam.co.uk

Comments: Thanks for the quick reply. I know the pary has been remodelled recently, my mother still lived in Park Cottages when it was done and we placed a bench there dedicated to my dad. We all spent so much time on the park, it was like our garden.

Comments: Keeping an eye on Anita and her shop !!!!! Big Sis.

Comments: It's nice to see Shaw, as I used to visit my family there in the 70s/80s. I have to admit that I don't like the idea of cameras capturing people's movements, and then it being 'streamed' via the Internet. Wow, this is straight out of Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four"! Whether the law permits this or not isn't really relavent- it's a matter of ethics. So, people have to be careful what they say when outside- or the Thought Police will 'purge' them in the dead of night??

Winston Smith

Reply from The Shawcam Operator: Winston Smith is the name of the main character in George Orwell's book"1984."

I have to admit I have never read the book and the two times I've tried to watch the film I've fallen asleep both times and missed the end.

From what I have seen and with all the hype about "1984" I understand Orwell was trying to warn people to avoid being led into a totalitarian society where people would be told what they couldn't do. Such places do exist and thankfully the United Kingdom isn't one of them.

I think you'll find that if you do an Internet search for the presence of webcams in any free society you'll find there are lots of them but if you search for webcams in a totalitarian society there won't be many, if any, there. Try a google search on "United Kingdom webcams" to see how many results you get, then try "North Korea webcams" and see what that brings up. Let me know if you can find a website that actually shows a live webcam picture of a public place in North Korea.

Also, I would bet, if you were in North Korea, you wouldn't be able to find a copy of 1984 to read either.

So I would say that the presence of webcams, far from making a place like Orwell's 1984, they show it is the opposite.

Best regards,

The Shawcam Operator.

Comments: i lived in shaw for 25 years and never knew i was being watched by a web cam when i was out shopping! just found the site and think its great im now living in liverpool but its good to know i can have a nosey at the old place whenever i want without having to drive 50 miles there and 50 miles back home again as an ex gorbie i will be keeping my eye on the place from now on

Comments: Shawcam is a very good idea,it keeps an eye on wot is going on,those who say its invading their privicy,1 way it is but another way its not because when you get attacked, mugged, beaten,or your car stolen, whats the first thing that comes to your head??? yes,,,i wish i had a camera!!! SO yes i agree on the cameras.. So somebody has got a brain in shaw....F T DRIVER X

Comments: VERY IMPRESSED,IT`S A CREDIT TO YOU AND THANK YOU FOR MAKING AN EFFORT

Comments: Hi. We are local residents of High Crompton and have been here for a good number of years (40). Great website. It's good to see just how many people around the world are still interested in a small mill town. Just a thought, how many people know about our waterfall in Pingots Quarry? What did they call it? It has always been known to us as Pingots Waterfall. Our Parish Council are now trying to come up with a name. Why? its already got one?

Comments: really enjoy the shawcam, lived in shaw until 1983 when we moved to crewe cheshire,

Comments: Wonderful site! My sister emigrated to Perth, Western Australia 18mths ago and I miss her like mad. I have passed her this WEB address and she is thrilled she can now take a trip down memory lane if ever she is feeling a little home- sick . It would be great if there was a picture of Neston Close, which backs onto a little area called Buttonhole (a beautifully tendered residential garden accessible to the public) and Grains/Buckstones Road with the stunning views. My sister and I spent many a happy hour around there walking her dog Sandy,(sadly no longer with us),and indeed my husband and I now live there, having fallen in love with the views. A lot of people are unaware that this area exists and it would be nice to show them just how beautiful it is, and how privileged we feel to live here and be able to enjoy, given that so much greenbelt and beautiful surroundings are disappearing in one way or another. Thank you to everyone who has made this Website possible.
Jackie Watson

Comments: I was delighted to find your site. I was born in Shaw, lived on Osborne St, went to Shaw Church School and then Chaddy Gram but now live in Calgary, Canada. I still return to Shaw every one to two years to see my mother and think of it fondly. I don't feel so far away when I can see the videocam views!

Comments: Hi Just been introduced to Shawcam by my brother, a very good site, I was born in Boundry Park and lived in Shaw until I was 21 when I joined the Army. I served my apprenticeship at Osram (G.E.C.), no longer there, I lived on Leach St went to Greenfield Lane School then Royton & Crompton Secondary, also lived at Rushcroft.
In my school and early apprentice days I used to swim for Crompton and was Captain of the swimming team for a couple of years in the 60s, would it be possible to see a photo of the role of honor board in the swimming baths where I spent most of my school days training when Dick Davis was manager, once again a great site.

Comments: Hi Operator
I entered comments on your site on Sunday, I returned to the guest book and viewed what I had written and it was fine, I returned to the site to-day and my comments had vanished, any ideas as to why they have been removed?

Alan C Salisbury

Reply From The Shawcam Operator: Hi Alan, Although your entry is displayed to you immediately after you have entered it. It is not displayed in the public guestbook until after it has been reviewed. This is because there are some slightly loopy people in the World that seem to enjoy putting obscene or otherwise offensive comments on website bulletin boards. Many of them are cryptic messages that seem innocuous at first glance but contain hidden meanings. Typically the names are contructs of offensive messages of the "Ben Dover" type.

Best Regards,

The Shawcam Operator.

Comments: It is my understanding that the term "Shaw Gorbies" was a name given to the residents of Shaw by the residents of High Crompton, who called themselves the "Crompton Angels" On Sunday after church the boys from each area would get together with their clogs on and kick the hell out of the other gang. My father, Harold Chapman, his brother, Frank Chapman, and their uncle, Eric Steele used to talk about how they would draw lots to see who got the first kick in. They said the one who made the first kick had "better make sure it was a good'un afore the other lads got goin'..." Thanks for the cam. Found it by accident today and enjoyed the drive round Shaw...Please go down Rochdale Rd towards Turf Hill one of these days...
Thanks! Marlene Chapman Schuck, USA

Comments: Young sir this is still a great site to look at here in Alabama USA. Why dont you say who you are? you have done well.God bless you.
Paul and Debbie Hurley. pjhdlh@aol.com

I sent a message yesterday asking you to drive down Rochdale Rd to Turf Hill, and today, when I got back to my desk from lunch, there was the Bulls Head and the Fairview and the bottom of Turf Hill Rd...what a blast! Made my week!

Thanks so much...
Marlene Schuck Lancaster PA

Comments: I think this site is ace!! I only live in Royton myself but was born and bred in Shaw. Its great to see the town center and rover cam doing their stuff.
Would it be possible for rover cam to stray to Royton? Maybe he could come over the roylee estate and surrounding area's.

Comments: Great Webcam where are the casinos and theme parks gone or was I that drunk when I used to visit the Pineapple.

Comments: Dear All..

Thank you for showing Shaw in its full glory. I left Shaw in 1982, I went to Beal Vale followed by Crompton House. Where I met people like Stephen Barrett, John Shaw, Andrew Mills, Karen Ashcroft etc.... I most remember the Barrett family who lived on Scarr Lane [as I did]and the twins Darren and Lee Graham and MIchael Sims. As a child I used to play with Carol Lord and often went with my two younger brothers James and Jonathan Vernon to he moors where they happily try to kill themselves on their motorbikes. Since I left Shaw, I have become a professional archaeologist and historian and a published author. I obtained a post guaduate qualification in the above subjects and is currently researching for a PHD in Landscape Archaeology / History - focussing upon Place / Field and Surnames along with the bumps and humps of the landscape. In my home town of Bolton - I carry out heritage walks and lecture on Landscape history.

I would like to hear for anybody from Shaw or the mentioned schools. Someone out there must remember me Sara Vernon - the girl who thought that David Soul was God - well he still is in my eyes. My address in Shaw was 20 Scarr Lane.

I Hope to hear from you soon
Sara.

Comments: David Hamilton used to visit Shaw. :)

Comments: From Alan Cleaver Salisbury: A while ago I asked it it would be possible to include a picture of the hononers board in Shaw baths, as yet no picture? the reason I ask is I used to swim for Shaw & Crompton in my school days and was club chapion for 3 years and I would like my daughter to see my name, any chance PLEASE!

Reply From The Shawcam Operator: Hi Alan, I've been to the Swimming baths and taken some pictures of the Trophy cabinet, (click here) but I suspect that during refurbishment work carried out several years back many things have been removed from the building and never put back. I vaugely recall the "Honours board being on a wall but it isn't there now.

Comments: I left Shaw in 1966, but return usually on an annual basis to meet up with some old friends. I find your site extremely good and professionally presented. Thanks very much. I would greatly appreciate a photo of No.2 Worsley Place to be added to your gallery. I have fond memories of visiting my grandparents as a child at this address. Keep up the good work...Regards Tony C

ANY CHANCE OF THE GUESTBOOK BEING UPDATED TO SHOW THE TIME AND DATE OF THE COMMENTS?

Reply from the Shawcam Operator: Hi,

The guestbook page is generated by software at the Internet Service Provider, It is a simple CGI scripted page which does not support any fancy features, but you can always add the date to the end of your messages. This posting was made 7/12/06.

Comments: Brilliant!! Our kid just e-mailed me with a link to the site.. Not been the same since Crawley left the Star. I see big hands Wilson hasn't left or Tony Sie (is he still a teenager?) Just lighting the barbie on the balcony & waiting for the wife to get me another beer from the fridge.

Comments: Hello everyone,
I lived in shaw from 1962 to 1975 at high crompton and went to Crompton house(or crummy house as we used to affectionaly call it !).
I went straight in to the RAF from school and then moved to Wales where I am now.
I loved to walk Over Buckstones road to Grains bar and then to Delph and Saddleworth and spent many hours in the pouring rain !!.(like Wales really)
I've only recently found this website but it brings back many happy memories which have stayed with me.
If anyone remembers me please say hello.

Comments: I know this is probably a lot 2 ask, but could u possibly get a panoramic picture of some sort taken from the veiwing station(not sure of the correct name, sorry) at the country park at Brushes Clough, where the old Quarries used to be. Thank you also thank u for the 1 u did of St James St for me.

Comments: Love watching Shawcam. Used to live facing the Weavers. We will get our grandchildren to wave to us every week now that is back up and running. We live in Goa now and love to watch Market Street. Barbara

Comments: I know this is asking a lot, so will understand if the answer is no. Could u take some sort of panoramic view from the "lookout platform" (sorry dont know what the technical name is) at brushes clough old quarry, off Buckstones rd. A few that could then be stitched together would be nice. Also thank u for the piccies of st James, used 2 live there, is taff still running the off licence?

Reply from operator: Funny you should ask that as we have just finished taking photos from the viewing platform and will be putting them on the site soon. Yes, Taff is still running the off licence, along with several other shops in Shaw. Please keep you eyes on the site as we will be adding new items soon.

regards

Jim and Jan

Comments: My father lived on Oak street shaw from being two years old but he has no photo's of the Street or the common at the back of the house with the airrade shelter they played in, has anybody got any photo's my dad is now in his 70's.
Nice to see the old Shaw.

Comments: Thanks for providing photographs of the Trophy Cabinet at Crompton Baths. I recall the 'team photo' on the second shot which includes Jas Buckley, who was the superintendant at the time, and Dick Derbyshire was the 'key man' who used to open the lockers. My dad held the record for 50 yards freestyle for many years at Crompton Baths. Incidentally, your Guestbook could easily become son of Friends Re-united as I noticed a name from the past on one of the entries (Frank Dawson). If it is the same person he used to go to Crompton House school (Ridley House?)and left around 1958/9. He was a friend of Brian (Joe) Partington and they were both role models for us younger lads. If Frank reads this I wish him well. Tony Clarke (Coventry)

Comments: Excellent!! I realy appreciate your effort. Keep it up.

Comments: Hi, I am the current secretary with Crompton Classics ASC. We have had a couple of requests from people recently asking about historical information regarding the club. Unfortunately, we do not have anything documented, apart from the engraving on the trophies. I am currently trying to gather information relating to the club and would love to hear from anybody who has any information at all that could fill in the gaps. Please contact me (Liane Robinson) care of Crompton Pool Farrow Street Shaw.

Comments: I realized when reviewing my itinerary carefully for the first time that I had inadvertently booked myself an 11 hour layover in Heathrow on my trip from Boston to Barcelona. I panicked, then found this site. Now I still feel stupid, but at least I don't feel alone.

Comments: It is nice to see live shots of Shaw. Congrats to who-ever designed and implemented the system. Peter Marsh ex Chadderton lad now Naples Florida

Comments: Aiya!
Definitely one of my favourite webcams!
Any chance of you posting that rovercam video for downloading?

Dennis from Hyde in Sweden.

Reply from Operator: The Rovercams are tempoarily disabled to allow us to develop the site. However, you can still get to them and download the files in the following way: Go to the camera selection page and click on the 'Rovercam'  selection, you will then be told that the cam cannot be viewed but there is a 'click' here' instruction at the bottom of the page that will let you open them anyway. Here's the link to save you the trouble of going through all the pages. www.shawcam.co.uk/rovercamvideolist.htm You can then select the file and do what you want with it. - Jan

Comments: hello shaw!!!
a week on friday (good friday) i will be joining in a pub crawl 'round shaw to celebrate 'cheese & pickle' day as i have been doing for many years now. it's always held on good friday & begins at the cartshaft where they have a little cheese & pickle buffet to munch on.
does anyone have any idea why we do this & how it began? i'm guessing it has something to do with the working man's club!!?

Reply from Operator: Well you've got us stumped, but if anyone else knows, please email us from the 'contact us button and we'll pass on the info! Regards, Jan

Comments: In my opinion some information is not absolutely true, but in general very good site.

Reply from Operator: Please let us know which particular information is inaccurate as we would like to correct it. Email us from the 'contact us' button on the site and we will do our best to put things right.  Regards, Jan

If you want to see what's going on in Shaw these days, have a look at our new venture. www.shawlive.tv  Yes, we're letting the people of Shaw and Crompton let rip and do their own thing on the internet! The site is still in test mode at the moment, ready for a launch later this Summer, but there's already plenty to look at to get you interested.. Why not have a look and let us know what you think. There's a contact button on the site to email us.
